Ashtanga vinyasa yoga is a dynamic form of yoga that links breath and movement together via a set sequence of postures. This flowing practice builds strength and suppleness of the body and encourages dedication and consistency. The synchronisation of breath and movement helps to bring about a calm and focused state of mind. Classes in North Melbourne are suitable for all levels of experience. Attend the led class as a beginner or if you are new to this system of yoga. If you already have a regular ashtanga practice and are familiar with Mysore style, you are welcome to book a casual class.

I joined Anita’s yoga studio approximately 2 years ago, to increase my mobility. I was suffering from tight shoulders and a stiff back, which was causing significant discomfort during cycling and other physical activities. Anita introduced me to Ashtanga Yoga, where she taught me the fundamentals, and several poses targeting my hips and shoulders. As I progressed, my flexibility and core strength improved substantially, which translated to reduced pain during exercise and zero visits to the physiotherapist. Anita is an attentive teacher, highly knowledgeable and is always happy to offer practical advice to her students to help them achieve their goals. I cannot recommend her highly enough.

Led Practice

In the led class you will be guided verbally and introduced to the primary series of Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga as part of a group. Modifications and variations will be offered, taking into consideration individual strengths and weaknesses. Attend the led class to familiarise yourself with this system of practice or as a beginner to gain an understanding of the physical postures of yoga and to learn the appropriate breathing to support your practice. The led practice is best attended within the framework of the 4 week beginners course, however, you are welcome to attend this class on a casual basis. Once you know the Surya Namaskar and standing postures you can move forwards into mysore style.

Mysore

This option is for students who have a regular ashtanga practice. Students work independently on a series of postures that is most appropriate for them. Practice to your ability, your own pace, your own breath. When practising Mysore style, the teacher quietly discusses and assists you with your practice. Over time, you will be introduced to new postures relative to the changes happening in your body.

If you have a regular ashtanga practise you are welcome to book a casual class. You can practice Monday - Thursday between 6 pm - 7:50 pm. You are welcome to start your practice anytime between 6 pm and 6:30 pm and the studio is open until 7:50 pm (even though it doesn’t say this on the timetable).
